Gears 4 starts a new trilogy and follows the same idea: the player faces a new, scary enemy. The setting is dark, taking place mostly at night (3 of the 5 acts are at night). The swarm are, even more than Locust, creatures that will literally steal kids at night (something Chris Perna, Art Director for the og Gears said about the Locust by the time Judgment came out). I'll talk a little about the visuals, now. Yes, Gears 5 is on a league of its own, but Gears 4 with its night setting, the rain, all of the lush foliage, just hits right. These setpieces are more visually pleasing than anything I find in Gears 5, which is set at daytime and is hurt, imo, by the open ended levels.Īll in all, I'm finding Gears of War 4 to be more in line with what made the Series's visuals stand out so much, even though the characters, dialogue and story aren't all that great.
